I hope this will be more useful than the Merry X-Mas Subsector.

I do think that this almost follow the rules for popular subsectors from a previous post. We have some backwater worlds, but they are not independent. We have 2 interstellar states. We have obvious adventures, and also a place called home. Dublin for some of us, Armagh for Eamon, and maybe somewhere else for someone.

The obvious adventures can be taken from the news (old and new) about Ireland.

This leads me to my suggestion of 4 races in this subsector. They should represent the Celtic, the Norse, the Protestants and the Catholics (or Old and New English). The lazy could use Humaniti, Vargr, Aslan and Bwaps or any other Traveller races that might fit. The more ambitious may want to invent their own races. An interesting scenario would be if the Humans represent the Celts. Then this will be in the far far future, when Humaniti have been driven away from their home-worlds to this cluster at the edge of the galaxy. Another interesting scenario could be if the Humans are the latest (New English) invaders. Then there might be some interesting moral dilemmas about the genocide of the original inhabitants of this cluster.

One thing to note about the map is that the towns and villages that are not in the map are still there as secondary populated worlds. E.g. Banbridge is a planet in the Armagh System. In the empty systems within the borders, there might be deep space objects.

One suggestion was to do this using Irish names. In my opinion, these are too long to fit on the map, so I just present the data here. You might try for yourself if you think you can make a pretty map of this.

Eire Subsector with UWPs and names in both languages. – pdf file

The idea for this was from a popular post on the facebook Zhodani Base page. This version is updated with a few ideas from the comments at facebook. So running an idea at facebook, before posting it at the base is quite useful. If You want to be able to influence the posts at the base, you should join the Zhodani Base facebook page.

  1. I especially like the amber designation for Limerick. Felt exactly like that when I lived there. Not that anything ever happened to me (and I was walking alone at night, but they just might have assumed I was too dangerous to touch), but every time one opened the newspaper there was another violent crime reported. Yup, amber zone. 🙂

  2. As a tourist, I had no problems in Limerick. I visited a medieval dinner at Bunratty Castle, and after that we partied all night. In Limerick I also bought a hurling stick as a souvenir in a sports shop. I was asked by a local if I was a hurling player while leaving the hotel. 😮

  3. This leads me to my suggestion of 4 races in this subsector. They should represent the Celtic, the Norse, the Protestants and the Catholics (or Old and New English).

It’s a bit close to the bone for me – representing the differences in Ireland by race, rather than by political viewpoint – as is the case nowadays. Look at the different viewpoints of people on opposing sides of the debate in Ireland – people who could be seen as being of different ethnicities:

    Martin McGuinness – Irish Republican.
    Ken Maginnis – British Lord.
Gerry Adams (English surname!) – Irish Republican.
Garrett Fitzgerald (Old English) – ex-Irish Prime Minister.
    Mary Robinson – ex-Irish President.
Peter Robinson – Unionist First Minister of Northern Ireland.

    And that’s just a snippet!

  4. Your sector Landgrab idea looks promising, especially after reading about a massive emigration of Slavic peoples from the Solomani Rim, to Magyar sector,I have a question though, wouldn’t they encounter the earlier Villani Imperium in their travel to the coreward reaches of the galaxy?…Also, you would have to deal with Vargr pirates(They seem to be EVERYWHERE in the galaxy!!!…),especially, seeing how prolific they can be, not to mention, also the fringes of the Zhodani Consulate…(You are kind of close to their neighborhood, no ???…)

  5. With this I am not landgrabbing any of the OTU. This is more of a suggestion of what can be done. Take a piece of terran geography in an interesting era and the make a subsector or sector or universe of it.

If you aren’t happy with the OTU, use what you like from it and make an ATU. Or make your own from scratch. This suggested method is one way to do it. So for the Vilani and Vargr; make them do whatever you like in your traveller universe. 😉

  6. While I remember, there are a few planets with Irish names in the OTU:

Youghal in Spinward Marches hex 3039
    Donegal in Diaspora hex 2632
Limerick in Solomani Rim hex 0226
    Derry in Gushemege hex 1740
    Drogheda in Dagudashaag hex 2304
    Dublin in Lishun hex 2730
    Belfast in Fornast hex 0625

  7. This is great! Though I think the Burren should be an asteroid belt with an X starport 🙂 (Maybe it’s in the Ennis system.) Giant’s Causeway and Tara Hill could be lost ruins of the Ancients in the Coleraine and Drogheda systems.
