Zhodani Base Awards 2021

Welcome to the Zhodani Base Awards 2021! 2021 has been a strange year. For Traveller products it was another good year. Lots of new stuff from the small publishers (and Mongoose).

The first category is “Best Cover“. The nominees are:

The winner of the “Best Cover” category of the Zhodani Base Awards 2021 is: Hostile Rules  from Zozer Games.

There were lots of Traveller products with nice covers this year. I really like the Droyne on the cover of the Wagner Incident, but Hostile Rules is so green and stylish. Lots of love for all nice covers.

Next category is “Best Fanzine or Online Magazine“. The nominees are:

The winner of the “Best Fanzine/Online Magazine” category of the Zhodani Base Awards 2021 is: Freelance Traveller.

Freelance Traveller has once again proved that they are the best fanzine by publishing bimestrial issues with lots of good contents for free.

Freelance Traveller has won this category every year since 2011!

Next category is “Best Adventure“. The nominees are:

The winner of the “Best Adventure” category of the Zhodani Base Awards 2021 is: Deepnight Revelation from Mongoose.

There were lots of fine Traveller Adventures for different settings published. I really liked the price of Death Station, but Deepnight Revelation is just amazing.

Next category is “Best Ship or Deckplan“. The nominees are:

The winner of the “Best Ship or Deckplan” category of the Zhodani Base Awards 2021 is: Rivington Class Medium Transport from Moon Toad Publishing.

There were lots of fine ships for Traveller published this year. I like the idea of a Carrier, since then you can run Space: Above and Beyond games, but the coolest and most useful design was the Rivington Class Medium Transport.

Next category is “Best ATU Product“. The nominees are:

The winner of the “Best ATU Product” category of the Zhodani Base Awards 2021 is: Cepheus Deluxe from Stellagama Publishing.

This category always make me happy since you can always find so many cool ideas, settings, and useful books.

Next category is “Best OTU Product“. The nominees are:

The winner of the “Best OTU Product” category of the Zhodani Base Awards 2021 is: Traveller: Explorer’s Edition from Mongoose.

Mongoose continues to churn out good quality products for the OTU. What I really like about the winner is the price.

A final bonus category this year is “Best Free or Pay What You Want Traveller Product“. The nominees are:

The winner of the “Best Free or Pay What You Want Traveller Product” category of the Zhodani Base Awards 2021 is: Death Station from Mongoose.

There were a lot of great free products this year. In 2021, I am happy that a great adventure from Mongoose is free.

Now, go and download all of the free Traveller Products. Why? They are free!

New style for the Random Subsector Generator

The Random Subsector Generator has been updated. It now outputs an image in PNG format instead of ASCII.

Old and New Style
Old style to the left | New style to the right

The new style outputs a quite large image, 2066px × 2922px. The hexes are big enough include UWP and Trade Class. I have used a purple colour for UWP and Trade Class so that this extra information won’t stand out to much.

For the new style there are 10 types of planets. These are the same types that are used in the Traveller Universe program.

State of the Base

2020, that was a crazy year. I got Covid-19, but I was lucky and was sick for only three weeks.

What has happened at The Base in 2020? A lot of things (and some things that I hadn’t planned to do), but not as much as I had hoped!

Highlights

The Zhodani Base now has reached over 960 fans at facebook.

I made two starship fonts:

The old Signal GK website (with Classic Character and Animal Generators) was reopened.

Cepheus Journal, a new fanzine was created by the Cepheus Journal Editorial Team with the help of lots of article submissions.

I made a Random Starship Generator.

To-do List

My to-do-list has not changed a lot since last year. But I did some other cool things for Traveller and CE in 2020 instead.

  • Run an Amber Zone contest this year. (Let’s do this again.)
  • Write reviews of Science Fiction books and Traveller Products. (I have a huge backlog.)
  • Repost some more stuff from the defunct Traveller Freeport website.
  • Post season 3 of the The adventures of Starship Notorious.
  • Publish the Cepheus Sector.
  • Change theme to make it look more like the Amber Zone website.
  • Do something when the number of facebook followers reaches 1000.
  • Publish Cepheus Störtebeker.
  • Work with Cepheus Journal.
  • Continue with CE generated sectors.
